Who doesn’t love to go to Singapore? This small country has so much to offer in such a small place. Most of us usually circle around Orchard Road and shopping malls around the center of the city looking for any source of entertainment. Some of us even go to Sentosa Island, the designated entertainment island in Singapore to experience some adventure. But who knows that starting from now we can even find adventure in our own hotel?

Here in Little India, lay a small hotel named Wanderlust. Living up to its sensational name, Wanderlust claim itself as “a left-field and totally experimental boutique hotel set to draw madcap voyagers and curious travelers to its doorstep.”[1]

With We Heart mentioned this hotel “as close to a childhood fantasy as you can get,”[2] there are more reasons to know more about Wanderlust Hotel. This hotel room is consisted of 29 rooms in four floor levels, with each level assigned a unique theme.  The first floor is the hotel lobby, with the rest being the guest’s room. The rooms on the second floor are neon themed, the rooms in the third floor are origami and pop art themed, and the rooms in the fourth floor are fantasy themed.

 The first selection of rooms provided are the neon themed room on the second floor. The room is quite simple, as shown in the picture. But with the application of neon colors and decoration, every room have different vibes to itself.

 The second selection of rooms are the origami and pop art themed. These rooms are more spacious, though the furniture is still kept to the minimal. Each rooms carries out different themes and mood in it, even though the type of the decorations are similar one to another.

 The third selection of rooms are the most appealing one, giving endless possibilities to dreams and experiences. Actually the furniture in this room is quite simple, not much of a difference than the previous rooms. But the way the rooms are arranged is the milk to the cookie. They also add another appealing feature in the room, besides the free drinks in the mini fridge, is the espresso machine they called: The Nespresso.

For some people, hotels are only places to stay and have a sleep. But for the others, hotels can be such entertaining destinations for your vacation that can give you new experience for staying in such unique places.

Here are some places that are undeniably beautiful and surely give you unforgettable experience to stay.

1. HOTEL DE GLACE – QUEBEC CANADA

Located 10 minutes from downtown city, we can see an amazing hotel made of ice! This means it is only exists in several months in winter. Built since 2000 the hotel opens each year in January until March. To built this hotel, 500 ton ice and 150000 is needed. The interiors such as bed, closet until as small as glass for drinking and so on are beautifully made of block ice.


2. MUSEUMOTEL - RAON L’ETAPE, FRANCE

These cute bubble house is located on an island near a river.  Each room is circular consists of circular staircases with comfortable bedroom, dining room with unique and comfortable design.

3. SALA SILVERGRUVA - SWEDEN

Located 155 meters under the land, the place was once a silver mining spot.  The place was like a cave with comfortable bed and sofas, with a warm lighting. From the room you can see beautiful underground caves and lakes.

4. HOTEL SILKEN PUERTA AMERICA MADRID - SPAIN

World famous architect, and artist. The hotel is located in Spanish with futuristic design and no room is the same.  Zaha Hadid, the famous architect designed one of the room and become the most well known room at the hotel.

5. CEDAR CREEK TREEHOUSE - WASHINGTON

Living in a treehouse has been a huge dream for most children around the world. Located 50 feet up in a 200 year old Western  Red Cedar tree. There is a”stairway to heaven access, giving you spectagular mountain views 100 feet high in a nearby fir tree.

There are still a lot of beautiful hotels and villas all over the world, this just a little piece of it. Hope we'll can visit them some day to experience the eccentric architecture and view :)

Among skyscrapers and luxurious buildings in Seoul, Korea, this green and eccentric building catches my attention a lot since the first I saw the review on an architecture magazine. If you're a green architecture lover, this building might be a huge inspiration ever.

Designed by Mass Studies' Minsuk Cho and Kisu Park, this green-clothed cubic building was completed in 2007, located in Gangnam District Seoul, South Korea. The building consists of three levels. The first level is the Store of Belgian Designer Ann Demeulemeester while the upper level is for restaurant and multi shops at the basement. The building uses as much as natural materials and foliage to cover both the external and internal wall surfaces, wanted to incorporate as much nature as possible into the building within the constraints of a low-elevation, high-density urban environment.

Personally I think this building is neither massive nor so outstanding. But this building has its own beauty because of its simplicity. The green walls are so special because this is what gives the building the signature style. The shape of the building is pretty because of the circular shape and edges. The combination of green and white are so harmonious that makes this building the center of attention at the whole district.

The Candy Room

       Hello everyone, I was browsing through the internet and I found an interesting store in Melbourne, Australia, called "The Candy Room". I suppose from its name you already know that it is a store that sells sweets. But, it caught my attention the moment I saw the design of its interior.

    The Candy Room was owned by Cristina Velardo and Leonie Schwetzer who own the company Sweet Enough. Sweet Enough is a company that import sugar free products across Australia^[1]. They hire the RED Design Group "with a brief for a store that had to be edgy, humorous and uniquely charismatic. It was not to be simply a shop; it had to be a destination and an experience".^[2]

      So, the design of the store has a design that emphasize with the concept of illusion to make the customers go back to their childhood using the playfulness of its design to create a sense of childhood and fantasy.  To achieve this, all the wall was painted white to create a white space, and then it is exaggerated and contrasted through the usage of black artwork lines to draw cartoonish furnitures and a kitchen. The sense of children is created through the help of the sweets there, and if you look at the pictures at first glance, you would notice that the drawings are made by kids or teenagers. Finally, an illusional experience of 'room' and childish was created, even though there is no 'room'.

       Personally I don't really like sweets, but I like the design of this store because even though I just see it from photographs, I can already sense a small part of the unique space there and I feel like going back to my childhood for a moment. I would love to go there someday so I can really feel the strong experience. So, for those of you who like sweets, you should stop by at this store if you go to Melbourne.

10 Longest Construction Projects in the World

Hello Everyone, I came across an article about the longest architectural works across the world and I decided to share it with you guys.

Each Projects has a photo with a brief description translated by myself.

I hope that this article can enhance our knowledge on architecture history.

10. Roman Coliseum

The Roman Coliseum, which was located at Rome, Italy, was built from AD 70 - AD 80 ordered by Emperor Vespasian to be built and completed by his son, Titus. The coliseum was built to dissociate Vespasian from bad tyrants. It has an ellipse 188m long and 156 wide, and can contain more than 55,000 spectators.^[1]

Construction period: 10 years

9. Parthenon

Located at the Acropolis, it was built dedicated to the Goddess Athena. This construction is said to have mesmerizing beauty because of its accuracy and details in its design. It is constructed between 447 BC - 430 BC.

Construction period: 17 years

8. Great Pyramid of Giza

Located at Egypt, the Giza pyramid was constructed from 2580 BC- 2560 BC. It is the tallest construction  constructed by men before the Eiffel tower. Its construction has risen debate of how it can be built due to its amazing geometrical aspects.

Construction Period: 20 years

7. Sacsayhuamán

Located at Cusco, Peru, the Sacsayhuamán was constructed from AD 1445- AD 1508. It is a wall complex that some believe it is built to represent the head of a puma. This construction is amazing because the construction use no mortars. The workers carefully cut the stones and boulders so they can lock each other very strongly. 

Construction Period: 63 years

6. York Minster Cathedral

At first, it was called the norman minster until the archbishop Walter de Gray transformed it into the York Minster from AD 1220- AD 1472. It is decorated with the largest glass in the world and said to represent the middle ages technology.

Construction Period: 252 years

5. Chichen Itza

Located at the Yucatan peninsula, Mexico, it was constructed from AD 600 - AD 1000. It is the most famous Mayan building with accurate astronomical calculation. The peak of the pyramid serves as a loudspeaker for its people. The total area of this construction is 6 mil^2.

Construction Period: 400 years


4. Angkor Wat Temple

Located at Cambodia, The Angkor Wat Temple was constructed from AD 802 - AD 1220. It is constructed by the lord of Khmer Kingdom. It has walls with length of 4 km, covering the 800.000 m²  , and built as a tribute to the Hindu God, Wishnu.

Construction Period: 418 years

3. Petra Stones City

Located at the middle of the Jordan Desert, it is constructed from 600 BC - AD 1250. It is carved directly from the stones hill there. What make the construction took such a long time is the absent of modern tools to cut and shape stones during its time. 

Construction Period: 850 years

   

2. Stonehenge

Located at Wiltshire, United Kingdom, it is constructed from 3100 BC - 1500 BC. Even though its age is already more than 5000 years, nobody really knows how it was constructed because there was no modern tools at that time to carry a 4 tons stone with such precise accuracy, parallel with the movement od sun and moon. 

Construction Period: 1600 years 

1. Great Wall of China 

Located and built along the northern borders of China, The Great Wall was constructed from 400 BC- AD 1600. It is actually wall constructed by different kinds of dynasty and was joined all together eventually. It has a length of 6600 km and was guarded by more than 1 million soldiers to protect the Chinese empire from various nomadic attack. It is estimated that more than three million workers died during its construction.

Construction Period: 2000 years

The Sleeping Beauty Castle

It’s intriguing how architect could help transform imaginations into reality. The creations of an architect takes form as a solid structural forms that can actually be seen, photographed, touched, even wandered around in it. Talking famous fairy tale adaption that captivated the heart of millions of people around the world, no one can do it better than Walt Disney. Disneyland became a place that never gets old, people from any range of age can go there and still find ways and places that would captivate them still.

Daily parade on Disneyland

Disneyland is no ordinary theme parks. Each of its rides and buildings are well themed architecture designed with world-renowned architects, making a visit to Disneyland feels like a true visit to a true fantasy world. From the roller coaster, the hotels, even trains that will take you in and out of the resort, everything is beautifully designed to make sure every experience the customer had is an unforgettable one.

The iconic structure that towers and marks Disneyland, also used as a logo for Disney Company is the Sleeping Beauty Castle. The adaptation from the cartoon animation The Sleeping Beauty really matches the aura and image that was portrayed from both the cartoon and the fairy tale. Each Disneyland have different characteristics of Sleeping Beauty Castle, matching the themes that each Disneyland applied.

The Disneyland that located in the United States is the house of the oldest Sleeping Beauty Castle. Even though it’s only 77feet tall, it looked much taller than the real height because of forced perspective (lower elements are larger than the top elements f the structure). This castle is the first one to provide the walk-through entertainment previewing the story of Sleeping Beauty, which later adapted in every Sleeping Beauty Castle around the world. US’s version of Sleeping Beauty Castle uses more gold color and light blue shade on the top turrets making the turrets really shiny and causing it to really look like a fairy tale castle during the day.

Sleeping Beauty Castle in Hong Kong Disneyland

The castle in Hong Kong Disneyland is a carbon copy of the castle in the US, even though there are some adjustments that are made. The Sleeping Beauty castle in Hong Kong uses darker shade of blue on the turrets and apply more pink color to the body of the castle, while the accents and decorations also uses white and pink color while the US version uses golden accents.

Fireworks at Hong Kong Disneyland

Every night, there is a fireworks show on the Sleeping Beauty Castle. In Hong Kong, fewer trees to provide wider view to the fireworks show, because the viewers may sit and watch the show from in front of the castle until the plaza in the back.

The castles are decorated for its anniversary. The US Sleeping Beauty Castle celebrated its 50^th year anniversary recently, and some décor of the castle is renewed. The castle is repainted with a bit brighter colors, making it more shiny, and five turrets on top of the castle are painted with stylized crown, with each crown representing a decade. The fireworks show throughout that year is represented by the story of Tinker Bell.

Similar experienced will be have in Hong Kong Sleeping Beauty Castle, where the castle is re-decorated to be Tinker Bell’s pixie dusted castle. The caste is covered with golden pixie dust lights, which will sparkles in the sun and illuminates in the night.

With attractions that will make everyone cheer as they’re little kids, Disneyland sure to live up to its reputation as the happiest place on earth.
